John F. MacPherson

John F. MacPherson

Services & interment were held privately for John F. “Sweet Mac” MacPherson, who died on Thursday, April 19th, 2012 at his Revere home, following a long & difficult struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, at 71 years.  Born in Stoneham, he lived his early life in Melrose & Medford, & was a 1958 alumnus of Medford High School.  In October of 1960, he entered the United States Army during the Viet-Nam Era, & served until October of 1966.  In 1968, he & his wife, Rose M. (Donnarumma), established J/R Repro Graphics, a company that earned them “best graphics” in Boston magazines.  They serviced schools, colleges, & privately served many up & coming musicians in the Greater Boston area.  Their endeavor became a family affair, with all three children working within the business.  In 1990, his family gave him an alto saxophone for his 50th birthday because of his love for all music, especially jazz.  He then entered into a new career as a “Busker,” aka “Street Musician.”  He lived the life of a “free spirit” traveling the country.  In 1996, he teamed up with his friend “Trumpet Bob” & began a long stint in New Orleans as a busker.  During the winter, he would head for Key West where his fame & talent gave him the name of “Sweet Mac.”  In 2011, because of his age & declining health, he returned to Revere & his family, who cared for him at home until his passing.  He is the husband of Rose M. (Donnarumma) MacPherson & the Devoted father of: Donna M. MacPherson & her husband Donald P. Higgins, William A. MacPherson all of Revere, & John F. MacPherson, Jr. of Everett.  He is the cherished Grandfather of: Ashley Sanphy of Exeter, New Hampshire, Emma R. Higgins of Revere, & Jonathan A. MacPherson of Chestnut Hill, MA.  He is the Dear brother of: Richard MacPherson of Middleton, Thomas MacPherson of Reading, Robert MacPherson of Oregon, & Stephen Aiello of Delray, Florida.  He is also survived by his great-grandson Michael F. Cerasulo & several nieces & nephews.  Before returning to Revere, he spent a brief time in Brattleboro, Vermont composing & arranging in collaboration with his son, Billy, which brought tremendous joy to him.  His postings can be found on the “Jukebox” page at: bluesmansweetmac@gmail.com.  A memorial gathering will be held sometime during the summer months & will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to: Playing for Change Foundation, P.O. Box 1505, Culver, California 90232 (www.playingforchange.org).
