Donna Lee Umana Newcomb
Donna Lee Umana Newcomb of Swampscott, a nationally known authority on non-profit fund-raising, passed away on January 14 of 
complications from cancer. She was 72. She was the wife of the late John “Jack” E. Newcomb.
A Boston native, Donna was born and raised in the Orient Heights section of East Boston. She was the daughter of the late Guy and Yolanda (Vitale) Umana, who owned and operated a family bakery in East Boston. She was the niece of the late Hon. Mario Umana, a municipal court judge and veteran state legislator.
Her formative years in a tight-knit Italian neighborhood were influenced by politics and community involvement. Her father was a political activist and, in later years, became a columnist for several local newspapers. Some of her earliest memories were of leafleting in Maverick Square and asking voters to cast their ballots for “Uncle Mario.”
Music was also a strong influence in her young life. Her mother, a graduate of the New England Conservatory, taught piano. In later years, Donna was very close to her uncle, the late Bill Vitale, a well-known jazz saxophonist. Bill toured the country with Woody Herman in the 1940s and played with big band organizations in New York and Miami into the mid-1990s.
A graduate and active alumna of Girls’ Latin School, Donna received a BA degree in psychology from UMass, Amherst. She began her development career at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford where she served in increasingly responsible positions for more than 28 years. During her tenure, she led the hospital through two successful capital campaigns and established a nationally recognized, comprehensive, development program that served as a model for other non-profit community hospitals across the country. Donna was also responsible for the creation of the Office of Corporate Philanthropy for Hallmark Health, the merged entity of Lawrence Memorial and three other community hospitals.
Following her many years of fundraising in the health care realm, she joined Suffolk University as a senior director for development and major gifts. There she mobilized a trustee committee to complete a capital campaign for the School of Law. Donna also designed and managed a first-ever capital campaign for the College of Arts and Sciences.
Taking on the challenge of fundraising and development in a new arena, Donna accepted a similar position at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem. During her tenure, she revitalized fund raising efforts by repositioning the leadership annual giving program, resulting in record-breaking numbers in dollars raised and donors participating.
Late in her career, Donna returned to health care philanthropy at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, where she served as director of campaign planning. While there, she structured the Clinic’s first formal patient referral program and established the first donor recognition program for physicians and colleagues.
While pursuing her career in philanthropy, Donna also took the time to be involved in a new endeavor, joining her late husband Jack in opening La Prima Donna in 1994, an award winning, gourmet Italian food shop and catering service in Swampscott. Working weekends, she helped Jack pursue his second career and shared his passion for fine cuisine. Prior to moving into the role chef/entrepreneur, Jack was an associate director at MITs Center for Advanced Engineering Study. He also traveled the world as a lecturer and consultant on the principles of quality management.
During her long and productive career, Donna was an active participant in many professional organizations including the New England Association for Health Care Philanthropy, where she was past president; the National Society of Fund Raising Executives (NSFRE), where she served as a New England chapter board member; and Women in Development. She also served as chair of the Association of Philanthropy for Fund Raising at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Donna was recognized as a Fellow by the Association for Health Care Philanthropy, the highest, most prestigious, peer designation. She also received professional certification from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives.
Donna is survived by her partner and best friend Harvey Pastan of Marblehead. Donna and Harvey enjoyed boating, reading, going to the movies, spending time together in Nantucket and Florida and they were patrons of the Boston Symphony and the Beacon Hill Seminars. Also surviving are her sister Anne of Swampscott, and brother Mario of Lynnfield, as well as nephews Stephen, Michael, Christopher, and niece Valerie Amenta. She also leaves many close friends and colleagues who will miss her loyal friendship, lively curiosity and generous spirit.

Morgan was an alumnus of the class of 1957 at Malden High School. He served in the U.S. Army from August of 1957 thru June of 1960, during the Viet-Nam Era. Morgan had a long career of over 35 years, with New England Tel & Tel, now Verizon, as an equipment installer & foreman.
He is the cherished father of Morgan P. Mulkerin & his partner, Mari Bakalczyk of Billerica, Camille A. Nappa of Malden & her late husband, Massimilliano C. “Max” & Andrew J. Mulkerin & his wife, Kerri of Billerica. He was the cherished grandfather of Kaitlin M. Mulkerin, Marissa C. Mulkerin, Morgan C., Shawn P., Lindsey E., & Drew J. Mulkerin, all of Billerica, Massimilliano C. “Max” Nappa, Jr., Anthony M., & Joseph M. Nappa, all of Malden. He is the dear brother to Ann Romano & husband, John, Kathy Troiani & husband, Michael, all of N.H., John Mulkerin & wife, Beverly & the late Mary & Al Kincaid, Winnifred “Winnie” Troiani, Sally Bartolo & Margaret “Peggy” Puleo. Born & raised in Revere, he was a 1979 alumnus of Revere High School. For over 25 years, Bobby was a fixture in the Food Service Department at Wonderland Race Track working as a foreman’s helper. Bobby worked there until the track closed its doors. He was a long-time family member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of Chelsea. His Mom’s family, the Boehner’s & the Gatchell’s were members since the early 1900s. The family has had three generations of dedication and service to St. Luke’s Community.
He is the beloved son of Ethel M. (Gatchell) Long of Revere & the late Robert E. Long, Sr. He is the dear father to Jessica L. Ralphs of Revere & the devoted Brother of Sandra L. Eye & Ear Infirmary at Massachusetts General Hospital of Boston. Recently, for the past year, Lauretta has been working from the Quincy satellite office of the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary at M.G.H. She had been with the hospital for over thirty (30) years.
She was the beloved daughter of the late Daniel R. & Theresa C. (Santosca) Salerno. She is the cherished sister to Raffaele Salerno & his wife, Lorraine of Malden & Arizona & Anthony Salerno of Georgetown. She is also the devoted aunt to Melanie Salerno of Salem, Elisa St. Clair & her husband, Craig of Georgetown, Tonya Salerno & her husband, Shawn Morrissey of Medford & Ralph Salerno of Georgetown. Born & raised in East Boston in 1927, she & her family moved to Medford in 1944, where Lillian finished her schooling, graduating from Medford High School in 1946. Lillian lived in Medford until moving to Revere in 1950, where she lived with her beloved husband of 67 years, Albert A. Nicotera. The couple moved to Seabrook, N.H. in 2010. While in Revere, they were residents of Olive St. for all that time. Lillian was primarily a specialized homemaker, enjoying & spoiling her family & many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews. For a short time in the 1960s, she worked as an independent Insurance provider at Logan Airport.
She is the devoted sister of Carmen & Roger Salucco, both of Danvers, Ma., Linda M. Anderson & her husband, Robert of Seabrook, N.H. & the late Florence Donovan, Joseph Salucco & Jerry Salucco. Although, the Nicotera’s were childless, they regarded their nieces, nephews, and many grand-nieces & grand-nephews as their children and were elated to have such an intense & loving relationship with all of them. Lillian was also the daughter of the late Carmine & Josephine M. (Annese) Salucco.

Frank L. Stibolt, Jr.

Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107) Revere, For Frank L. Stibolt, Jr., who died peacefully on December 31st at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, following a long illness. He was 74 years old. A funeral service will follow the visitation in the funeral home at 11:15 a.m.
Frank was born & raised in East Boston. He grew up at Jeffries Point and he could often be found at the Jeffries Yacht Club. It was there where Frank’s love and passion for boats and the sea was born. While at the yacht club, he would become friends with the Millerick brothers. A true & genuine friendship would last close to seventy years. He was educated in Boston Public Schools and was an alumnus of Boston Trade School, Class of 1962. Frank’s interest in school was woodworking & carpentry. Frank was very talented and he could build anything. In 1964, Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper. His precision & meticulous work ethic, kept him from going overseas. His commanding officers were so impressed with how efficiently Frank prepared and rigged parachutes that they insisted he teach the class. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1965 with the majority of his time at Fort Benning, Georgia. He began a 25-year career as a rigger at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in East Boston, and worked there until their closing. He then proudly accepted a position as a rigger at the Charlestown Naval Yard during one of the restorations of our nation’s oldest war ships, the U.S.S. Constitution. Franks working career also consisted of working at Fed Ex at Logan International Airport in the Heavy Weight Division. Frank participated in the Veteran’s Day Program in Chelsea for several years, where he made lasting friendships with other US veterans, and made them all laugh with his jovial personality and quick wit. Frank was known as a quiet and humble man. He knew many people but held special friendships close.
He is the beloved son of the late Frank L. Stibolt, Sr. & Mary Margaret ”Dolly” (Simpson) Stibolt. Loving & devoted longtime companion of the late Susan J. “Susie” Keohane and her late mother, Josephine Keohane & her late brother, James J. “Beansie” Keohane, Jr. Brother of Eugene Stibolt of Tennessee. He is also lovingly survived by his lifelong surrogate brother Gerard E. Millerick of East Boston and his brothers, Peter W. Millerick of East Boston & Martin J. Millerick of Winthrop & the late Edward Millerick & Richard Millerick and many friends. Late lifetime member of the Jeffries Yacht Club & U.S. Army Veteran.

Susan A. (Evensen) Myers

Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rte. 107), REVERE, for Susan Ann (Evensen) Myers, who passed away on Saturday, December 30th at Boston’s Brigham & Women’s’ Hospital, ending a valiant & dignified struggle with multiple myeloma. Her funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday, January 8th at 11 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (Corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.) REVERE at 12 Noon.
Born & raised in Medford & Winchester, she lived in Winchester until marrying, 35 (thirty-five) years ago, & moving to Revere. Susan would marry, on June 13, 1982, Michael P. Myers, Sr., one of the Myers Brothers, who owned & operated “Reliable Heating & Appliance” of Revere. An alumna of Winchester High School, Class of 1974, she was also an alumna of Mt. Ida College, Class of 1976. Later, she attended the School of Liberal Arts at Boston College. Susan’s involvement with Immaculate Conception Parish Community was intense with the school, where her two children attended. Her late son, Michael P. Myers, Jr., while an elementary student, was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy & succumbed to the complications arising from that disease when he was only 14 years old in May of 2002. The Family Nucleus (Susan, Michael Sr., Sister, Colleen & Gram Evensen) became “Michael’s Team” & soon became a beacon of inspiration to be emulated in the face of sadness & tragedy. That same intense devotion to family arose again, when Susan received her diagnosis several years ago. Susan continued at her position at Lahey Clinic as Principal Patient Advocate until a month ago. She began her career at Lahey over twenty-one years ago as a Manager in Medical Records. In the late 1980s & all through the nineties, she was most active in Immaculate Conception Parish with all school projects, fundraising and anywhere a hand was needed. She is especially remembered for her part in the organization of the many fall bazaars.
Besides her beloved husband of 35 years, Michael P. Sr., she is the devoted mother of Colleen A. Myers of Point of Pines, Revere & the late Michael P. Myers, Jr. She is the adored daughter of Susan Ann (Wilson) Evensen of Revere & the late, Roy A. Evensen. She is also the dear sister to Roy W. Evensen of Sarasota, Florida & Richard A. Evensen of Boise, Idaho. She was the daughter-in-law to the late, William “Sonny” Myers & the late Margaret “Sis” (O’Brien) Myers. She is also lovingly survived by her in-laws, the Myers Family of the North & South Shores, many nieces, nephews & cousins. Entombment at the Woodlawn Chapel Columbarium will be held privately.

Dolores S. (DeSouza) Pires

Dolores was born in Long Island, New York and at young age the family moved & settled in East Boston and she was educated in Boston Public Schools. As a young woman, she worked various jobs until she married Joseph Pires, Jr. in 1953. The couple settled in Revere where they began and raised their family. Dolores was a dedicated housewife and a fastidious housekeeper. She took great pride in her home and cooking. She was an affectionate mother and loved her children immensely. Dolores was known for her beautiful voice and loved to sing while in her home. She was also loved by all of her nieces and nephews.
She is the beloved wife of the late Joseph Pires, Jr., Loving and devoted mother of Debra A. Pires, Steven A. Pires & Joseph C. Pires, III, all of Revere. Dear sister of the late Valentina M. Malta, Louis DeSouza, Mary Costa & Lena Short. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. Interment will be private.

Sue B. (Mercadante) Guarino

Sue was born & raised in Boston’s North End and she was educated in Boston Public Schools. Sue worked for over 30 years at CIGNA Insurance Co., as a Claims Administrator. At the age of 20 years old, Sue married Peter F. Guarino, the couple remained in the North end for 20 years before moving & settling in Revere. She remained in Revere for over 50 years. Sadly, On March 1, 1995, she lost her husband. Due to her strong will and vivacious personality, Sue continued on with her life, surrounding herself with good friends and family. After retirement, she went to work at Stop & Shop (at Wonderland) as a cashier. Her sense of humor and warm personality kept customers coming back to the store and always choosing her line. She would forge friendships and often stay up to date with what was going on in their lives. These people loved Sue, and she loved them as well. Sue was robust, always ready for a good time, whether playing bingo, going off to the casinos or just going on a trip. She would always attend mass on a regular basis at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Her faith was very important to her and kept her close to God. At the age of 87, Sue was forced to retire again, after 15 years, due to the closing of the store.
She is the beloved daughter of the late Michael & Generosa (Capozzi) Mercadante. Devoted wife of the late Peter F. Guarino, together sharing 51 years of marriage. Dear sister of the late Ralph Mercadante, Guy Mercadante, Mary Melchione, Pino Mercadante, Caroline Esposito & John Mercadante. Cherished aunt of Christine R. Walsh & husband Gerard of Hanson & Florida, Geraldine Culver & husband Robert of Milton and their daughter Leah Culver of Boston and many other nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews. She is also lovingly survived by her caretaker & friend, Zehra “Sara” Music of Revere. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
