Barbara A. Gravel-Gillis

Family & friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Tuesday, June 12th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rt. 107) Revere for Barbara A. Gravel – Gillis, who died unexpectedly on Monday, June 4th at the Melrose – Wakefield Hospital after being stricken at her home in Saugus. She was 61 years old. A funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home on Wednesday, June 13th beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service in the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Winthrop Cemetery, Winthrop.

Barbara was born & raised in Winthrop. She attended Winthrop Public Schools and was an alumnus of Winthrop High School, Class of 1975. Immediately after graduation, she began working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the State Treasurers Office as a clerk in the Department of Abandoned Property. She later took a position as a Service Agent at Avis Car Rental at Boston’s Logan International Airport where she worked for approximately 8 years until she was forced to retire due to her declining health. Barbara’s most important and precious thing in her life was her son, Owen. She was a very proud mother and she had admired the man he had become.

She is the cherished & loving mother of Owen J. Gillis of Saugus. The devoted daughter of Ann C. (Welter) Gravel of Topsfield, formerly of Winthrop and the late Joseph R. Gravel. Dear sister of Kimberly J. Vellante & her husband Albert V. “Al” of Ipswich and the late Rae F. Chappie & husband Steven Chappie of Spring Hill, FL. She is also lovingly survived by many devoted nieces & nephews, extended family & friends.

We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
