Elizabeth E. “Bette” (Raulins) O’Brien

Family & friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Friday, November 8th, in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rte. 107) REVERE from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., for Elizabeth E. “Bette” (Raulins) O’Brien, who passed in the loving presence of her God & her devoted family. Mrs. O’Brien died on Friday, November 1st (The Feast of All Saints) at the Devereux Nursing Care Center of Marblehead, following a lengthy confinement.

Born & raised in Revere, she was an Immaculate Conception “girl” from inception, attending I.C. Grammar School & as an alumna of IC High School, Class of 1946. Soon after graduation she began working with N.E. Tel & Tel (Verizon) for over 35 years. She rose quickly in the ranks, as “Head” or “Lead” Operator” & then onto managerial & executive levels at the Franklin St. NE Tel & Tel & main office (often referred to as the “Motherhouse”) “Bette” came from a family of long-time working telephone workers, who appreciated their secure & pleasant work. The “girls” sought out all the overtime they could muster always holding plans for the future. Their time, maturing, was outstanding & so much an ingredient of the “the greatest generation”. Never forget the family you were blessed with and the joy of early years. Although, she was the first born to Dorothea E. (McLaughlin) Raulins & Kenneth F. Raulins, her baby early childhood brother, Kenneth F. Raulins, Jr., died early at 5 months from early childhood disease. Thusly, “Bette” was raised as an only child, enjoying the abundant attention showered upon her, for her “larger than life personality” & her absolute stunning good looks. She never ever throughout her life, lost the gift of humility, keeping the welfare of her dear & devoted family first & prime. Friends and their well-being followed until “death did them part…” Bette referred to her role as Mother, Grandmother & Great Grandmother as the most exciting and rewarding influence on her life. Early in her young life, as a Mother, she became absorbed in the many teacher-parent organizations at Immaculate Conception & subsequently, also became involved with the volunteering opportunities in the Parish. “Bette” was also a long-standing member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

She is the beloved wife of the late Revere Fire Lt. William F. O’Brien, who passed on Oct. 9, 2000. Cherished mother to Donna M. O’Brien-Martinson & husband Gus of Reading, Debra A. Keefe & husband James V. of Stoneham, William F. O’Brien, Jr. & wife Lauren of Revere & Dorithea M. O’Brien-Julian & husband Neil of Londonderry, NH. Adored grandmother to David G. Martinson & wife Dr. Magdalena, VM of Hoboken, NJ, Brienne M. Black & husband Michael & Katelyn M. Martinson & her fiancé Eric Steinert, all of Winchester, Elizabeth M. Rybczynski & husband Dr. Jakub Rybczynki of Arlington, Erin N. Dee & husband Patrick J. Dee of No. Reading and New Hampshire Patrolman James V. Keefe, Jr. & wife Danielle of Dover, NH, Justin W. O’Brien & wife Katherine E. O’Brien, MSN of Winthrop, Connor J. O’Brien & companion Desiree Deleon of Revere, Courtney E. Julian & Brendan W. Julian, both of Londonderry, NH. Also lovingly survived by her 9 Greatgrandchildren, Alanna, William, Julia, John, Jakub, Katherine, “Kasia”, Shannon, Heidi & Madelyn “Maddie”. Devoted daughter to the late Kenneth F. & Dorothea E. (McLaughlin) Raulins & dear sister of the late Kenneth F. Raulins, Jr. Many close & proud cousins & extended family also survive “Bette”.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.

God bless you all.
