Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, January 21st, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Joseph F. Gillen, who died on Tuesday, January 15th at Mt. Auburn Hospital of Cambridge following a brief illness, at 87 years.  His funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday, January 22nd at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, at 10:30 a.m.  Born & raised in Revere, he was a 1943 alumnus of Revere High School.  He entered the United States Navy immediately following graduation in July of 1943 & served until February of 1946 as a Gunner’s Mate-3rd Class.  For all of his working career, he was immersed within the newspaper industry.  For his early years, he worked at the Daily Lynn Post & then moved onto the Boston Herald & then finally to the Boston Globe.  He retired from the Boston Globe in 1988, after 25 years of service as a Pressman.  He is a member of the Printers’ & Pressman’s Union, #3 & an Honorary Life Member of the Graphic Communications International Union.  On May 2nd, 2012, Joseph suffered the loss of his beautiful & faithful wife of 63 years, Kathryn M. (Fogarty) Gillen, now he will lovingly join her.  He is the Devoted father of, Barbara J. (Gillen) Gillham & her husband, Patrick T. Gillham of Sherman Oaks, CA, Steven J. Gillen of Revere, & Mark S. Gillen & his wife, Maria of Peabody.  He is the Cherished Grandfather of, Patrick J. & Kelsey M. Gillham both of Sherman Oaks, CA, Christopher J. & Alycia K. Gillen both of Peabody.  He is the Dear Brother of, Ella Gouveia of Revere & the late, Mary Bishop, Frances Flynn, Catherine Sullivan, Margaret Gillen, John & Martin Gillen.  He is also lovingly survived by the Fogarty Family & many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.  Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
