Joseph J. DeStefano, Sr.

Family & friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Wednesday, February 22nd from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rte. 107) REVERE, for Joseph J. DeStefano, who died following a lengthy illness at the Pilgrim Rehabilitation Center of Peabody, on Friday, February 17th. His funeral will be conducted from the Funeral Home on Thursday, February 23rd at 10:00 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., REVERE, at 11:00 a.m.

Born in Boston, the family moved to Revere, when Joe was a young boy. Joe lived in Revere almost all of his life & for about twenty years, was a resident of Andover. He was an alumnus of Revere High School, Class of 1952. In his early working career, Joe dabbled in the shoe industry as a cobbler & manufacturer. Latter, he would become one of Revere Beach Boulevard’s pioneers in restaurants and lounges. For many years, he would manage & own several small, but busy, bars, including the Jo-Jo Room, Hurley’s Palm Gardens and the Beach Ball, all located on the infamous Revere Beach Boulevard. For over fifteen years, Joe owned and operated, his last enterprise, “Joey D’s” at Orient Heights, East Boston.  “Joey D’s” staff & the “the gang” it attracted, made it the place to be and be seen. It made “Cheers” seem tame.

Joe is the devoted father to Debra A. Jones & her husband Rodney of Andover, MA, Dawna L. Emma & her husband Philip of Topsfield & Dr. Joseph J. DeStefano, Jr. PhD & his wife Dr. Alicia DeStefano, PhD of Northborough, MA. He is the adored grandfather of Joseph J. DeFabrizio of Amesbury, Zachary Jones of Malden, Kaleb Jones of Andover, Christopher P. Emma of Somerville, Jonathon P. Emma of San Francisco, Calif., Isabella & Mia DeStefano, both of Northborough, MA. Also surviving Joe is his faithful friend & former wife, Anne E. (Mundy) DeStefano of Andover, the proud mother of his children. He was the beloved son of the late Joseph & Anita C. (Marshall) DeStefano. He is the loving & faithful brother to Anita Vinciarelli & her husband Anthony, M. Louise Powers, all of Revere, Marie Lupien & her husband Mark of  Sudbury, Margaret Johnson of Revere, Leonard DeStefano, Carl DeStefano & his wife Shelia, all of Winthrop, Sylvia Michetti & her Robert of Wallington, CT & the late Anna R. Alongi, the Matriarch of the DeStefano Family. Many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews, also survive him. Joe was a long-time member of the Fox Hill Yacht Club of Saugus & a social member of the Joseph L. Mottollo V.F.W. Post #4524 of Revere. Interment will be private.

To all our families, friends, and residents of Revere, East Boston, and surrounding communities of the North Shore,

We would like to announce that after 37 years of caring for thousands of families at our 773 Broadway location, on January 31st, 2023 we will be officially RELOCATING, to our new location at 262 Beach St., Revere.
On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
Thank you for your friendship and continued support.
God bless you all.
Faithfully,

Your friends at Vertuccio Smith and Vazza.
