Ruth M. (McCarthy) Merrill

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, December 19th, 2013 beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Ruth M. (McCarthy) Merrill.  Mrs. Merrill died on Monday, December 16th at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, following a brief illness, at 80 years.  Born & raised in Charlestown, she was an alumna of St. Francis deSales Grammar & High School, although she graduated from Charlestown High School, Class of 1951.  She remained in Charlestown until moving to Revere in 1965, & lived here until moving to Middleton with her daughters in 2007.  She worked as lead cashier for the Star Markets Group (Shaw’s) & retired in 1998.  Her expertise in her work led her across the state as the company opened new stores, where she would train the cashier team & move on to her next assignment.  Ruth was the beloved wife of the late William P. “Bill” Merrill, who died in July of 1988.  “Bill” was a popular personality & Revere DPW employee.  She is the devoted mother of, Robert W. Merrill & his wife Mary F. of Lowell, Joan C. Buonopane & her husband Bartholomew “Bart,” & Ruthellen Duhainy, all of Middleton.  She is the cherished grandmother of, Robert & Renee Merrill both of Lowell, William & Domenic Buonopane, & Zenah Duhainy, all of Middleton.  She is also lovingly survived by 4 great-grandchildren, & several nieces & nephews.  She was the dear sister of the late: Charles, William, John, & Daniel McCarthy, & Claire Aucella.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
