Charlotte R. (St. Croix) Sweeney

A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Anthony of Padua Church for Charlotte R. (St. Croix) Sweeney, who died on Sunday, February 20th at the Leonard Florence Center for the Living in Chelsea, following a lengthy illness, she was 95 years old. Interment followed in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Charlotte was a native of East Boston, born to the late William J. St. Croix & Charlotte (Dobbins) St. Croix and she was one of fourteen children. She was raised & educated there and was a proud alumna of East Boston High School, Class of 1944.  Charlotte was happily married to her husband Charles J. Sweeney, Sr. and together they raised their eight children in East Boston, later moving to Revere in 1977. Charlotte was all about family, coming from a large family and then having her own large family, she was committed to being the best mother she could be. She enjoyed being surrounded by her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren for any occasion. She loved having a good time and making wonderful memories.

She is the devoted wife of 50 years to the late Charles J. Sweeney, Sr. Loving & proud mother of Susan Leary & husband Dennis, Sr. of Malden, Charles J. Sweeney, Jr. & wife Terri of Billerica, William Sweeney of Revere, Gerald Sweeney & wife Susan of Sharon, Francis X. Sweeney of Revere, Mary (Sweeney) Pappas & husband James “Jimmy” of Essex and the late Charlene Sweeney & Jane M. Cox & her late husband John “Jack” Cox. Cherished Nana of 12 grand children & 6 great grandchildren whom she treasured dearly. She is the dear sister of 13 late brothers & sisters. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

Remembrances may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Bernadette M. “Bernie” (York) Carey

Family & friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Monday, February 21st from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rt. 107) REVERE for Bernadette M. “Bernie” (York) Carey, who died on Wednesday, February 16th following a brief illness, she was 88 years old. A funeral will be conducted from the Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 22nd at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., REVERE at 11:00 a.m. Per order of the Archdiocese of Boston, masks are required in Church. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Bernie was born & raised in South Boston.  She was educated in South Boston & was an alumna of the Gate of Heaven High School, Class of 1950. After graduating, Bernie began to work at MA Bell as a Telephone Operator where she worked until she was married in January 1956. She & her husband settled in the Point of Pines section of Revere. Together they raised their 5 children in Revere and enjoyed being close to Revere Beach. After her children were grown, she returned working as a Telephone Operator, which was now, New England Tel & Tel. She later left the telephone company to run their family business, The General Edwards Inn, which was where she met her husband many years prior. She continued to operate the business until its closing. Bernie loved nothing more than to be close with her family, they were what mattered most to her. She always put her children first because she was a selfless woman. She loved to travel to Florida where she would visit her sister. Bernie also loved to dance and listen to jazz music. Bernie was the founder of “The Sandlot League” in the Point of Pines.  She will be forever remembered as being a selfless person & incredibly hardworking.

She is the beloved wife of 27 years to the late Paul W. Carey, Sr. Loving mother of Susan C. Otolo & husband Robert W. of Revere, Paul W. Carey, Jr. of Bedford & his former wife Karen Carey of South Boston, Michael R. Carey & wife Christina of Revere, Barbara A. Napolitano & husband Michael of Peabody & Brian Y. Carey & wife Jeanette of Missouri. Cherished grandmother of Gillian C. Sideri & husband Nicholas of Peabody, Robert P. Otolo & wife Angela of Danvers, Bryana Israelyan & husband Arman of Idaho, Patrick Carey of Reno, NV, Rose M. Carey of So. Boston, Courtney M. Carey of Revere, Michael Napolitano of Boston, Christopher P. Napolitano of Somerville, Erin Baxter & husband Ethan of Honolulu, HI & Matthew Carey of Missouri. Treasured great grandmother of Nicholas, Nolan, Camden & Liam.  She is the dear sister of the late William & Arthur Walsh, Mildred Vulleumier, Claire DeFranco, Audrey Fahey, Marie Barry, & Beverly Stack. She is also lovingly survived by her late companion of 20 years Selvin “Sully” Paperino and many, nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

Remembrances may be made in Bernie’s memory to the Sutton House, 7 Sewall St. Peabody, MA 01960.

Roberta M. (Russo) Fountain

Family & friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours on Monday, February 14th, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rt. 107) REVERE for Roberta M. (Russo) Fountain, who died on Wednesday, February 9th at the Melrose – Wakefield Hospital in Melrose surrounded by the loving presence of her family following a long illness, she was 69 years old. Her funeral will be conducted from the Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 15th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (Corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.) REVERE at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held privately. Per order of the Archdiocese of Boston, Masks are required in Church.

Roberta was a longtime Revere resident. She was raised & educated in Revere and was a proud alumna of Revere High School, Class of 1970. Roberta was married to her husband Henry R. Fountain and remained in Revere where they raised their family. Roberta was always a mother first, she made sure that she took care of her children and gave them a home filled with love. She also worked for a number of years for PCF in Revere, a division of the Boston Globe in an administrative position. She enrolled in Bunker Hill Community College & North Shore Community College and earned a degree in Data Entry. Roberta later went on to work for Kohl’s Department Store in Saugus where she was currently employed for the past 18 years. Approximately 10 years ago, Roberta and her family relocated to Wakefield, where she was living at the time of her passing. On May 1, 2019, Roberta lost her love, Henry, after 39 years of marriage. Roberta continued to do what she always did best, being a selfless mother taking care of her family. She was blessed to be a grandmother & great grandmother. Roberta was hit by tragedy by loss of her daughter, Amanda M. Green, who was 39 years old & died on April 3rd, 2021 from a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. This was certainly devastating to the entire family, but Roberta continued to do her best to be there to support all of her family. Roberta was actively working as her health was declining and still going about her daily routine & scratching her lottery tickets only hoping to win and share her winnings with who else but her family. Roberta passed peacefully and was welcomed into heaven by the embrace of her loving husband & daughter.

She is the beloved wife of 39 years to the late Henry R. Fountain. Devoted & loving mother of Andrea M. Clark of Danvers, J. Henry Fountain & wife, Kim of Danvers, Justin A. Fountain & wife Stacey of Revere, Neal H. Fountain & his wife, Gina of Danvers, Alec H. Fountain of Wakefield & the late Amanda M. Green & her surviving husband, Joseph of Revere. Treasured Nana of Emily Green of Revere, Christopher, Charles & Luke Fountain of Danvers & 5 other grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren. Dear sister of Elizabeth Visco & husband Joseph of Lynnfield & Nancy Iengo of Peabody & her late companion Kevin J. Heavy. She is also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

Gladys (Boardman) Capizzi

Family & friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Thursday, February 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rt. 107) REVERE for Gladys (Boardman) Capizzi, who died on Sunday, February 6th at her home in Malden, surrounded by her loving family who adored her. She was 97 years old. A Funeral Service will be conducted in the Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., immediately followed with interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.

Gladys was born in Everett where she was raised & educated. She attended Everett High School and was married to her husband Salvatore Capizzi shortly after high school. The couple relocated to Boston’s North End where she was a proud homemaker and a devoted mother. Gladys raised her children with love & humility. She did everything for her family to be the best mother she could be. Unfortunately, due to the sudden death of her husband Salvatore, Gladys was forced to raise her seven children alone. She rose to the challenge and did her very best. Her family was the only thing that was important to her. She was a very loyal & devoted woman who carried a great deal of faith with her. She was always praying for her children, grandchildren & then later her great grandchildren & great great grandchildren. All she ever wanted was to be with her family enjoying & celebrating any holiday or occasion. Gladys maintained her home in the North End with her son Sammy, until he passed away nearly four years ago. At that time, Gladys went to live with her daughter Sonja in Malden.

She is the beloved wife of the late Salvatore J. Capizzi, Sr. Loving mother of Gladys “Joan” Green & her companion Arthur Kyriakidis of Quincy, Louise Morani & her late husband Frank of Quincy, Shirley R. Capizzi – Anderson & her companion Alan B. Segal of Revere, Gale Deuterio & her husband Paul of North Reading, Sonja Harrison & her companion James Coakley of Malden & the late Salvatore J. “Sammy” Capizzi, Jr. & Michael Capizzi. Cherished grandmother of 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren & 3 great great grandsons. Dear sister of the late Arnold E. Boardman & Kenneth W. Boardman. She is also lovingly survived by her most adored feline companion “Midnight” whom she treasured as well as several nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

Lawrence H. Gordon

He was 88 years old. A Funeral Service will follow the visitation in the Funeral Home at 12:15 pm. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Larry was born in Boston, raised & educated in Revere. He was an alumnus of Revere High School, Class of 1951. The following year, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He proudly & bravely served his country until being honorably discharged in 1956. Larry then began working as a Sheet Metal Worker in the Local # 17, a career that spanned 30 years. Larry was the devoted husband of Margaret C. “Peggy” (Buckley) Gordon, with whom he shared 30 years of marriage. Larry was a fun-loving man with a great sense of humor. He did everything with ease and a smile. He raised his 9 children, with his wife while living in Revere. In later years, they relocated down to their home in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where he has remained for the past 18 years. Larry was an avid fisherman, whether it was salt water or fresh water, Larry always wanted to go fishing. He was also a Life Member of the Revere Lodge of Elks #1171. Larry enjoyed people and talking with someone & getting to know them. He made friends wherever he travelled.

He is the beloved husband of the late Margaret C. “Peggy” (Buckley) Gordon. Loving father of Michael T. Gordon & wife Maria R. of Saugus, Amy J. Gordon & her companion Cory Mathieson of Haverhill, Eric S. Gordon & wife Paula of Gleeson, TN, Diane M. Clarke & husband David of Kona, HI, Former Revere School Committeeman Donald E. Lauren Ann Maniff

Lauren Ann Maniff, at 33 years, originally of Revere, passed away unexpectedly on January 27th in her New Hampshire vacation home. Her vibrance and love of life was infectious to each person she encountered. She was a world traveler who always had a story to tell. She had a passion for good food, great shows and the latest designer trends. She was a graduate of Tilton Preparatory School, where she played hockey, and then attended Suffolk University. While she was a student at Austin Preparatory School, she was the recipient of the Peacemaker Award. For many years, she worked as an office manager for the North Shore Suburban Hockey League in Saugus.

She is survived by her devoted parents, Judith and Nathaniel Maniff  (Retired Chief Fire Inspector of Revere) where she will always be the baby of the Maniff family. She also leaves behind her caring siblings, Jennifer and Michael Messier, Sarah and Mark Chancy and Jonathan and Francesca Maniff. She was a true animal lover who loved her cat Rocky and dog Oscar with all her heart. In her honor, donations are welcome at any animal shelter.

Of all the things she loved, there was nothing and no-one to which she derived more joy than from her nieces and nephew,  Ryan, Camdyn and Jordyn Messier and Mia Maniff. She is survived by Aunts and Uncles, Raymond and Patricia Maniff of Revere, Karen Maniff of Charlestown, James and Lily Layton of Wilmington and Janice and Ronald Ward of Billerica and many friends. She will be welcomed into heaven by those who have passed before her, including grandmothers Barbara Layton and Kathleen Maniff and grandfather Albert Maniff. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.

Kenneth C. “K.O.” O’Neil

Family and friends are invited to attend Visiting Hours on Friday, January 28th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm in the Vertuccio & Smith, Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Rt. 107) Revere for Kenneth C. “K.O.” O’Neil. Kenny passed away following a brief illness on Monday, January 24th at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 73 years old. A Funeral Service will be conducted in the Funeral Home at 7:15 pm. Interment will be held privately.

Kenny was a native of Winthrop, where he was born and raised. He was a proud alumnus of Winthrop High School, the Class of 1967. He was a long-time employee at Eastern Airlines, where he worked as a baggage handler for 25 years. When he retired, he held various jobs with his larger-than-life personality, including as a bartender at the “Shipwreck Lounge” on Revere Beach. Kenny made many friendships there and anywhere he went. Kenny also owned and operated his own business called “The Good Samaritan”, where he was a liquor distributor.

Kenny was a lover of the beach and he lived on Revere Beach with his longtime love, Despena “Dee” Baletsa. The couple shared 20 years of happiness and an abundance of wonderful memories. Kenny was undoubtedly a “people person” and he made sure that when you were with him, you were going to have a good time. He had a witty sense of humor, enjoyed sharing his colorful stories, and offered unmatched generosity to all of those around him. If you were a friend to Kenny, you were a friend for life and you could always count on him to be there for you.

Kenny enjoyed music very much, beginning with his trumpet playing in the Winthrop High School band. Kenny was also a member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks #1357.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was the longtime fiancée of Despena “Dee” Baletsa of Revere with whom he shared his home with for 20 years. He was also the former partner of the late Stephanie M. Ciampa, the beloved son of the late Francis J. & Claire N. (McGough) O’Neil, the cherished brother of Karen Daly and husband James of Stoneham. He was the treasured uncle of Kevin Daly and his son Chase of Wilmington, James Daly and wife Erin of New Hampshire, and Janet Daly of Stoneham. He is also lovingly survived by Gregory Nigro and his fiancée Sindia Taylor and their daughter Madeline of Quincy and Nicholas Nigro and his wife Jessica and their daughter Nata of Washington, D.C. And no one could forget Kenny’s beloved canine companion the late “Callie” along with his many loving and dear friends.

Russ R. Luciano

Russ was a long time Revere Resident. He was raised & educated in Revere. He was an alumnus of Revere High School, Class of 1977. All of Russ’ working career was spent in sales. Russ had a charisma and gift to connect with people, which allowed him to be a success in this area. He had the ability to listen to people and get them what they wanted. Throughout his life, he was always trying to be the best he could be. He loved his family unconditionally and did everything to help provide for them.

He is the beloved son of Jean M. (Scopa) Luciano of Revere & Joseph E. Luciano of Marco Island, Florida. Loving father of Russ C. Luciano of Berlin, NH & the late Tiana M. Luciano. Cherished Papa of Jasandra, Shawn, Jaylee, Natalia, Evan, Jordan & the late John Keegan. Dear brother of Denise T. (Luciano) Medina & husband Herm of Boca Raton, FL. He is also lovingly survived by his nephews, Albert Medina, Louis Medina & Michael Medina, all of Boca Raton, FL, and many loving cousins.

Paula G. (O’Hara) Zarni

Family & friends are invited to attend a Memorial Funeral Mass on Saturday, February 12th at 11:30 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church (Corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.) Revere for Paula G. (O’Hara) Zarni, who died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 20th at the age 67 years old in her home in Revere. All attendees must follow the Archdiocese of Boston Covid -19 Protocols and wear a Face Mask. Interment will be held privately.

Paula was born in Chelsea, raised & educated in Revere. She was an alumna of Revere High School, Class of 1972. She was married to her husband James A. Zarni and together they shared 42 years of marriage. Paula was a devoted wife & proud mother. She took great pride in raising her daughters, Jessica & Katie. She was a receptionist at Revere Pediatrics for 10 years. Paula later became a Certified Nursing Assistant working at the Chelsea Soldiers Home, and later worked as a Home Health Aide in Revere. Paula had a zest for life. When she was a young woman, she was a participant in the “Row – Row – Row to Revere”. She especially loved the beauty of the beach and the serenity of the ocean. She was an avid gardener and loved to grow a variety of flowers. Paula was also a huge animal advocate and especially loved dogs. Her family was always most important to her, particularly her four wonderful grandchildren.

She is the beloved wife of 42 years to James A. Zarni of Revere. Loving mother of Jessica Z. White & husband of Brian J. of Melrose & Katie E. Lombardi & husband Carl of No. Reading. Adored grandmother of Jacob C., Jaxson T., Gracie A., & Quinn E. Devoted daughter of the late Ret. Revere Police Patrolman Vincent J. O’Hara & Margaret Y. (Donovan) O’Hara. Dear sister of Judith A. “Judy” Violette of Ipswich, Eileen O’Hara of Chelsea & the late Elizabeth Little & Dennis O’Hara. Peter J. Ranese, Sr.

Funeral & Services were held privately for Peter J. Ranese, Sr. of Revere who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 18th, at the CHA – Everett Hospital, he was 90 years old.

Peter was born in the Jeffries Point section of East Boston. He was one of twelve children. He attended Boston Public Schools. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 16, 1952, during the Korean Conflict. He proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged on October 2, 1954. He returned home & he began to work for the City of Boston as a Crane Operator. He married his wife, Mary Nargi on February 3, 1957. The couple remained in East Boston for several years, before relocating to Somerville where they made their home & began their family. Peter was a devoted husband & father and worked hard to provide for his family. In the late 1980s Peter & his family moved to Revere. He sustained a work ending injury and was no longer able to work at the capacity as he was once did. Peter was known for his cooking skills, and he did all the cooking in the house. Peter made certain that he would take care of his family in other ways, like staying busy maintaining the home & fixing whatever needed to be fixed Family was all that ever mattered to Peter, he demonstrated his love for his entire family everyday.  

He is the devoted husband of 64 years to Mary N. (Nargi) Ranese of Revere. Loving father of Peter J. Ranese, Jr. & Joseph P. Ranese, both of Revere. Cherished grandfather of Danny Bua & his wife Lauren of Nashville, TN, Virginia Matyka & her husband Jarred & of North Andover, Matthew P. Ranese & his wife Nicole of Danvers & Rachel M. Ranese of Weymouth. Adored great grandfather of Tyler & Emily. Dear brother of Joann Ranese & Jeanette Ranese, both of Boca Raton, FL, and the late Salvatore Ranese, Michael Ranese, Anthony L. Ranese, Anna Hammam, Josephine Bruno, Mary Porazzo, Santa Ranese, Joseph Ranese, Jr. & Richard Ranese. He is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces & grandnephews.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
