Ruth M. (McCarthy) Merrill

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, December 19th, 2013 beginning at 9 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Ruth M. (McCarthy) Merrill.  Mrs. Merrill died on Monday, December 16th at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, following a brief illness, at 80 years.  Born & raised in Charlestown, she was an alumna of St. Francis deSales Grammar & High School, although she graduated from Charlestown High School, Class of 1951.  She remained in Charlestown until moving to Revere in 1965, & lived here until moving to Middleton with her daughters in 2007.  She worked as lead cashier for the Star Markets Group (Shaw’s) & retired in 1998.  Her expertise in her work led her across the state as the company opened new stores, where she would train the cashier team & move on to her next assignment.  Ruth was the beloved wife of the late William P. “Bill” Merrill, who died in July of 1988.  “Bill” was a popular personality & Revere DPW employee.  She is the devoted mother of, Robert W. Merrill & his wife Mary F. of Lowell, Joan C. Buonopane & her husband Bartholomew “Bart,” & Ruthellen Duhainy, all of Middleton.  She is the cherished grandmother of, Robert & Renee Merrill both of Lowell, William & Domenic Buonopane, & Zenah Duhainy, all of Middleton.  She is also lovingly survived by 4 great-grandchildren, & several nieces & nephews.  She was the dear sister of the late: Charles, William, John, & Daniel McCarthy, & Claire Aucella.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Gayle M. Johnson

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, December 16th, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Gayle M. Johnson, who died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 10th following a tragic vehicular accident, at 52 years.  Her funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday, December 17th at 10 a.m. followed by the Funeral Service in the Funeral Home at 11 a.m., followed by interment in the family lot at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.  Reverend Nicholas G. Granitsas, Pastor of First Congregational Church of Revere & a close personal family friend, will officiate.  Born in Everett, she was a lifelong Revere resident & a 1980 alumna of Revere High School.  She also attended Bunker Hill Community College.  She was a mail clerk & secretary for several Boston insurance companies, & for the past six years she was a clerk for Mellen Bank of Medford.  She & her family were longtime members of the First Congregational Church.  She was active in the Youth Group at the Church & also the Food Pantry at the Church.  She was the beloved daughter of the late, Ernest C. & Mary E. (Paul) Johnson.  She was the cherished & devoted sister of: Mark E. Johnson & his late wife Gail Lisa (Stathas) of Woburn, & Karen E. Johnson of Revere, with whom she made her home.  She is also the adoring aunt to Nicholas E. & Matthew M. Johnson, both of Woburn.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Food Pantry at First Congregational Church, 94 Central Ave., Revere, MA 02151.

Dolores M. (Ventola) Paturzo

Memorial Services will be announced at a later time for Dolores M. (Ventola) Paturzo, who died on Monday, December 9th, 2013 following a valiant battle with lung cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital of Boston, at 70 years.  Born & raised in Boston’s North End, she was an alumna of the former Julie Billiart Catholic Central High School of the North End, Class of 1961.  At school, “Dee” was known as a champion swimmer.  “Dee” left the North End over 50 years ago when she moved to Revere.  She worked for the Revere Police Department as a call-taker & coordinator for over 18 years, retiring in 2005.  She enjoyed cooking & baking for family & friends; loved knitting, crocheting & ceramics, & also taught an evening class for crafts at Revere High School.  “Dee” was the wife of the late, Thomas A. Paturzo, who died in November of 1997.  She is the devoted mother of Tracey A. Paturzo & her boyfriend Michael Matarazzo of Revere.  She is the cherished sister of: Angela Capone & her late husband Charles of Somerville, James Ventola & his wife Laurel Thorne of Ocala, Florida, Christine “Chris” Welch & her husband Allan Welch of Saugus, & Nicholas “Nick” Ventola & his wife Julie Ventola of Revere.  She is also lovingly survived by many nieces & nephews.  She was the daughter of the late, James & Lucy (Calococci) Ventola.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, 100 Cambridge St., Boston, MA 02114, or online at: giving.massgeneral.org.  Other condolences may be left to Dolores’ online guestbook at www.vertuccioandsmith.com.

William E. Powers

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, December 15th, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for William E. Powers, who died unexpectedly on Saturday, December 7th at his home in Anderson, South Carolina, at 65 years.  The funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday, December 16th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass in the Blessed Sacrament Church, 16 Summer St., Saugus, at 10:30 a.m.  Interment will be private.  Born in Saugus on August 8, 1948, Bill attended Saugus schools & was a 1966 graduate of Saugus High School.  He attended Wentworth Institute of Boston & graduated in 1970.  For over 20 years, he worked for Peabody Municipal Light Plant as an electrician, retiring in 2012, & moved to South Carolina.  Prior to the move, he lived in Revere for about 10 years.  The majority of his life was spent in Saugus.  He was an Army Veteran of Vietnam & Desert Storm, & served 24 years with the Army National Guard.  His memberships include the Saugus American Legion Post & the VFW & the Saugus Lodge of Elks.  Mr. Powers was a motorcycle enthusiast & member of the Hampton Seacoast Motorcycle Club.  He is survived by his devoted wife Brenda J. (Hemeon) Powers.  He is the beloved father of: William E. Powers, Jr. & his wife Michelle of Epping, New Hampshire, Jennifer & Janine Powers both of Saugus, Kim M. Catizone & her husband Michael of Pelham, NH, & Cheryl L. Cimino & her husband Sandro of West Peabody.  He is the cherished grandfather to Ashley, Nicole, Kaley, Samantha, Joseph, Cole, Cheyenne, & Nicholas.  He is the dear brother of Jacqueline Howard & her husband Donald of Saugus.  He is also lovingly survived by his great-granddaughter Cassidy, many nieces, nephews & cousins in Ireland.  He is also survived by his many friends & extended family in Anderson, SC.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to: The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 60 Walnut St., Wellesley Hills, MA 02481.

Rita I. Norftill

Graveside services at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, were held on Friday, December 6th, 2013 for Rita I. Norftill, who died at Boston Medical Center, Boston, unexpectedly on Monday, December 2nd, at 55 years.  Born & raised in Chelsea, she was educated in special needs programs.  Rita was one of God’s very special angels.  Her parents, Raymond R. Norftill & the late Rita I. (Thibault) Norftill, cared for her continually at their home.  Her mom, Rita, passed in May of 1998.  For the past few years, she has made her home at Marquardt Nursing Center of Waltham, where she thrived & was most content.  Besides her dear father, Raymond R., Sr. of Chelsea, she is the devoted sister of Raymond R. Norftill, Jr. & his wife Lou Ann of Pepperell, MA.  She is the cherished aunt of: Amanda L. Norftill-Towne & her husband Andrew of Milford, New Hampshire, & Jonathan R. Norftill of Boston.  She is also lovingly survived by her two grand-nieces, Alexia R. & Rayla A. Towne, & several cousins, aunts & uncles.  Remembrances may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 60 Walnut St., Wellesley, MA 02481.  The staff at the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals of Revere is honored to have served the family.

Pasqualina M. “Lena” (Buonopane) Symonds

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, December 1st, 2013 at Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, from 4 – 8 p.m. for Pasqualina M. “Lena” (Buonopane) Symonds, who died at her Revere residence on Wednesday, November 27th following a long illness, at 86 years.  Her funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Monday, December 2nd at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in the Immaculate Conception Church, Revere, at 10:30 a.m.  Born & raised in East Boston, she attended East Boston schools.  For many years, “Lena” worked in Boston’s Garment District as a lead stitcher.  Later, she worked & retired from an East Boston firm.  The family moved from East Boston to Revere in 1959.  She is the wife of the late James E. Symonds.  She is the cherished mother of Patricia M. Goodwin & her husband Timothy of Marblehead, & Angela R. Snow of Revere.  She is the devoted grandmother of: Nichole R. Snow-Dawson & her husband Thomas of Salem, MA, Howard J. Snow & his companion Ashley Constantine of Revere, & Christina R. Goodwin of Marblehead.  She is the dear sister of Joseph A. Buonopane of Rockland & the late: Vincent P., Anthony & John N. Buonopane.  She is also lovingly survived by her sisters-in-law, Helene Buonopane of Wakefield & Susan “Sue” Buonopane of Rockland, & many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, & grand-nephews.  She was also the daughter of the late, Vincent Buonopane & Filomena (Tecci) Buonopane-Masiello.  Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Conte, who passed on September 11, 1997.  For over 20 years, she worked for the former Schrafft’s Candy Company of Boston.  She is the devoted mother of: Linda Lysiak & her husband Paul of Melrose, Carol Conte & her husband Michael Cusato of Anna Maria Island, Florida, Lisa M. Shind & her husband Robert of Tewksbury, & the late Michael Conte.  She is the cherished grandmother of Jason Leach of Reading, Amanda Shind of California, Matthew Lysiak & Rebecca Lysiak both of Melrose, & Michael Shind of Tewksbury.  Dear sister of the late: Mary C. Berg, Joseph M. “Buck” Zarrella, & Arthur M. Mary R. (Altri) Steele

Memorial services were held for Mary R. (Altri) Steele on Monday, November 25th, 2013 in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals of Revere.  Mrs. Steele died on Thursday, November 21st following a brief illness at the Annemark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Revere, at 99 years.  She would have celebrated her 100th birthday in March of 2014.  Born in Somerville, she lived in Somerville, East Boston, Cincinatti, Ohio, & Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, before coming to Revere in 1972.  She was the wife of the late, Richard Carlton Steele, & the cherished mother of: Donald E. Steele & his partner, Cynthia Bourg, of Sebastian, FL.

Remembrances may be made to the Patients’ Recreation Fund at Annemark Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 133 Salem St., Revere, MA 02151.

Harold B. Brinig

Graveside services at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, were held for Harold Burton Brinig on Monday, November 25th, 2013.  Mr. Brinig died on Monday, November 18th at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center of Boston following a lengthy illness, at 81 years.  Born & raised in Somerville, he attended schools there & was a 1950 alumnus of Somerville High School.  All of his working career was as a truck driver for Local #25.  He retired at 65 years of age.  He served with the United States Marines during the Korean Conflict, from October of 1952 – July of 1953.  Harold was the husband of the late, Elizabeth J. (FitzGerald) Brinig, who died in March of 1997.  Mr. Brinig had been a Revere resident since 1959.  He is the beloved father of, Kathleen A. Scherber & her husband Paul of Danvers, & Raymond F. Brinig of Revere.  He is the cherished grandfather of Daniel P. & Kelly Scherber both of Danvers, & Aleczandre R. Brinig of Waltham.  He is also lovingly survived by his daughter-in-law, Theresha “Terry” Brinig of Waltham.  He was the brother of the late, Charles & Raymond E. Brinig, Jr., & the son of the late, Raymond E. Brinig, Sr. & Josephine (Barbera) Brinig.  Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice.

Anthony M. Zaccaria

Family & friends are invited to visit with family on Wednesday, November 20th, 2013 beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Anthony M. Zaccaria, who died following a long illness on Sunday, November 17th at the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers, at 66 years.  A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Revere St., Revere, followed by entombment in Holy Cross Community Mausoleum, Malden.  Born in Everett, he was raised in Revere, attended Revere schools, & was a 1965 alumnus of Revere High School.  He continued on with his education at Salem State Teachers’ College & graduated in 1969.  For over 35 years, Anthony “Toni” taught computer sciences at Revere High School.  He also worked for a time for Delta Airlines until retirement.  He is the beloved husband of Deborah A. (Tango) Zaccaria.  The couple & their family lived in Revere most of their lives before moving to Saugus in 1996.  They remained in Saugus until June of 2013, when they relocated to Reading.  He is the devoted father of Lisa Zaccaria of Reading & the late Michelle Zaccaria.  He is the dear brother to Arlene A. Baho & her husband Robert L. of Westboro, MA.  He is the cherished uncle to John M. Baho of Sandwich & Karen A. Baho of Quincy.  He is also lovingly survived by his father & mother-in-law, Robert & Phyllis (Cimino) Iudica of Saugus.  He is the adored son of the late, Anthony M. Zaccaria, Jr. & Elizabeth “Betty” (Palermo) Zaccaria.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the North Shore Hospice, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
