Visiting hours are on Tuesday, January 22nd from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Vertuccio and Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere for Thomas J. Murphy, Jr., who died on Thursday, January 17th at Golden Living-Elmhurst, following a long illness, at 92 years.  Family & friends are invited to attend the funeral from the funeral home on Wednesday, January 23rd at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield at 10 a.m.  Born & raised in Somerville, he was a 1938 alumnus of Somerville High School.  He also attended Boston University.  Mr. Murphy joined the United States Navy in September of 1942 & served until March of 1946.  Most of his working career was spent with the Army Corps of Engineers, as a Property Manager.  Mr. Murphy held a Massachusetts Real Estate Broker’s License & worked within the industry for over 20 years.  He was a principal in the firm of “Mallard, Moriarty & Murphy” of the North Shore, & worked until his late seventies.  The family lived in Revere for over 50 years, moving to Lynnfield in 1996.  He was a long-time member of the Revere Council, Knights of Columbus #179 & the Lynnfield Seniors.  Both he & his wife were devotees of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield & were both Eucharistic Ministers at the Church.  He is the beloved & faithful husband of 62 years to Catherine F. (Countie).  The couple would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this Sunday (January 20th).  He is the devoted father of, Joan M. Marks & her husband, Peter W. of Winthrop, Anne M. Russell of West Peabody & Thomas J. Murphy, III of Natick, & the late, Karen M. Zappala.  He is the Cherished Grandfather to: Meredith Cooke & her husband James Cooke, Jonathan & Ashley Marks all of Winthrop, Kevin Russell of Stoneham, Matt Russell of Los Angeles, California, Shannon Russell of Reading, Brittany Zappala-Acciavatti & her husband, Thomas & Miss Alex Zappala, all of Lynnfield, & Coleman Murphy of Paris, France.  He was also the Brother of the late, Rita Zappelli, & is also lovingly survived by many nieces & nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews.  Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery of Lynnfield.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the: New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
Although this announcement is bittersweet, as we say goodbye to our home, we are forever grateful for all of you for placing your constant faith and trust in us to care for your loved one. We will continue to do what we are best known for.
