Edward F. Palumbo

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, February 4th, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Edward F. Palumbo, who died unexpectedly on Thursday, January 31st at the Union Hospital, Lynn, at 68 years.  His funeral will be conducted from the Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 5th at 11 a.m., followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.  Born in Everett, he lived most of his life in East Boston & was a 1962 alumnus of Sacred Heart High School, East Boston.  Mr. Palumbo lived in Lynn for over 20 years at the time of his death.  He joined the United States Army during the Viet-Nam Era on August 18th, 1962 & served until February of 1963.  For over 35 years, he worked for the United States Postal Service, serving in many of the offices & finally at South Postal Annex, of Boston.  He is the devoted father of Michelle A. Palumbo of Haverhill, Dawn M. Palumbo Buono & her late husband, Michael of Methuen, & Kevin E. Palumbo & his fiancee, Kristen McCarter of Lynnfield.  He is the Dear Brother of, John B. Palumbo & his wife, Catherine of New Boston, New Hampshire & the late, Frank R. Palumbo.  He is also the Cherished Grandfather of, Daniel, Tyler, Elizabeth, Emily, Chloe, Haylie, Valerie, & Sabrina.  He is also survived by many friends at the Ocean View Apartments of Lynn, where he had lived for the past 20 years.

(Levosto) Dietzel, who died at her Revere home on Tuesday, January 29th, following a long illness, at 88 years.  Born & raised in Revere, she lived here her entire life.  She was a devoted Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister & Aunt.  Mrs. Dietzel was a deeply oriented family woman, who thoroughly enjoyed taking care of her immediate family as well as her extended family.  Her late husband, Ralph D. Dietzel, died on October 7, 2011.  She is the Cherished & devoted mother of Donna L. Walsh & her husband, Philip J. Walsh of Revere.  She is the dear Sister of, Anetta Spinale of Revere & the late, John & Joseph Levosto & Josephine Naso.  She is also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews.  Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the: All Care Hospice, 210 Market St., Lynn, MA 01901.

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Tuesday, January 29th, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for John Philip Hardy, who died on Sunday, January 27th at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, following a long illness, at 78 years.  His funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Wednesday, January 30th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, at 10:30 a.m.  Born in Boston, he lived his early years in South Boston & Dorchester. He was a 1951 alumnus of Boston English High School.  He entered the service immediately upon graduation from High School in June of 1951 & served four years with the United States Air Force, during the Korean Conflict.  For over 25 years, he worked for Hanscom Air Force Base within the engineering department.  As an engineer’s aide, he worked many of the most involved projects that were assigned to the Air Force, regarding the construction of aircraft & extraordinary equipment.  He also attended Fisher Junior College.  He is a member of the National Society of the Disabled American Veterans.  For over 15 years, John owned & operated,  “Jack’s Special Delivery Service” in the Metro & North Shore area.  He is the beloved husband of 52 years to: Elaine M. (D’Alessandro).  He is the devoted Father of, Susan M. Westhaver & her husband, Edward P. of Stoneham, Stephen M. Hardy & his wife, Andala of Columbus, Ohio & the late, Jean Hardy.  He is also the cherished Grandfather of, Daniel E. & Matthew J. Westhaver of Stoneham, Morgan R., Jack L. & Liam P. Hardy all of Columbus, OH.  He is also lovingly survived by, Kerry Overlan of Melrose, Lawrence Overlan of Canton, Kevin Overlan of North Reading & the late, Sheila Overlan.  Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.

Family & friends are invited to attend a Memorial Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 26th, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, for Walter M. Bruce, who died following a brief illness on Saturday, January 19th, at Genesis of Wakefield, at 76 years.  Born in Chelsea, he lived in Revere all his life, & was a 1954 graduate of Revere High School.  He was also a 1950 alumnus of the Immaculate Conception Grammar School.  He soon entered the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict & served for over 4 years.  Walter spent many years driving special needs children in the early busing days.  He is most remembered for his many years on the Beach (Revere Beach), working many of the local cafes & lounges as a Bartender, especially at Buddy’s Cafe & Bill Ash’s Pizza.  He was a member of the Revere Lodge of Elks #1171.  He was the beloved son of the late, M. Walter Bruce & Eleanor (Morgan) Bruce.  He is the dear father of Steven Ryan of Raymond, NH & Kimberly Richard & her husband, Mark of Hanover, NH.  He is the Devoted Brother to Retired State Police Sergeant James R. Bruce of Winthrop & his late wife, Carole P. Bruce, Eleanor “Sissy” Bruce-Kelley & her husband Robert N. Kelley of Fort Lauderdale, FL & New Hampshire, Barbara Bruce-Meade & her husband, Franklin “Frank” Meade of Revere & Marilyn A. Visiting hours are on Tuesday, January 22nd from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Vertuccio and Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere for Thomas J. Murphy, Jr., who died on Thursday, January 17th at Golden Living-Elmhurst, following a long illness, at 92 years.  Family & friends are invited to attend the funeral from the funeral home on Wednesday, January 23rd at 9 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield at 10 a.m.  Born & raised in Somerville, he was a 1938 alumnus of Somerville High School.  He also attended Boston University.  Mr. Murphy joined the United States Navy in September of 1942 & served until March of 1946.  Most of his working career was spent with the Army Corps of Engineers, as a Property Manager.  Mr. Murphy held a Massachusetts Real Estate Broker’s License & worked within the industry for over 20 years.  He was a principal in the firm of “Mallard, Moriarty & Murphy” of the North Shore, & worked until his late seventies.  The family lived in Revere for over 50 years, moving to Lynnfield in 1996.  He was a long-time member of the Revere Council, Knights of Columbus #179 & the Lynnfield Seniors.  Both he & his wife were devotees of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Lynnfield & were both Eucharistic Ministers at the Church.  He is the beloved & faithful husband of 62 years to Catherine F. (Countie).  The couple would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary this Sunday (January 20th).  He is the devoted father of, Joan M. Marks & her husband, Peter W. of Winthrop, Anne M. Russell of West Peabody & Thomas J. Murphy, III of Natick, & the late, Karen M. Zappala.  He is the Cherished Grandfather to: Meredith Cooke & her husband James Cooke, Jonathan & Ashley Marks all of Winthrop, Kevin Russell of Stoneham, Matt Russell of Los Angeles, California, Shannon Russell of Reading, Brittany Zappala-Acciavatti & her husband, Thomas & Miss Alex Zappala, all of Lynnfield, & Coleman Murphy of Paris, France.  He was also the Brother of the late, Rita Zappelli, & is also lovingly survived by many nieces & nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews.  Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery of Lynnfield.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the: New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.

Joseph F. Gillen

Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Monday, January 21st, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Joseph F. Gillen, who died on Tuesday, January 15th at Mt. Auburn Hospital of Cambridge following a brief illness, at 87 years.  His funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday, January 22nd at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, at 10:30 a.m.  Born & raised in Revere, he was a 1943 alumnus of Revere High School.  He entered the United States Navy immediately following graduation in July of 1943 & served until February of 1946 as a Gunner’s Mate-3rd Class.  For all of his working career, he was immersed within the newspaper industry.  For his early years, he worked at the Daily Lynn Post & then moved onto the Boston Herald & then finally to the Boston Globe.  He retired from the Boston Globe in 1988, after 25 years of service as a Pressman.  He is a member of the Printers’ & Pressman’s Union, #3 & an Honorary Life Member of the Graphic Communications International Union.  On May 2nd, 2012, Joseph suffered the loss of his beautiful & faithful wife of 63 years, Kathryn M. (Fogarty) Gillen, now he will lovingly join her.  He is the Devoted father of, Barbara J. (Gillen) Gillham & her husband, Patrick T. Gillham of Sherman Oaks, CA, Steven J. Gillen of Revere, & Mark S. Gillen & his wife, Maria of Peabody.  He is the Cherished Grandfather of, Patrick J. & Kelsey M. Gillham both of Sherman Oaks, CA, Christopher J. & Alycia K. Edward T. & Eleanor M. (Valiante) McFarland

On July 23rd, 2012, Edward T. McFarland died after a lengthy illness at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Melrose.  His dear wife of 69 years, Eleanor M. (Valiante) McFarland, was a resident of Annemark Nursing Home, Revere, where they had both been.  She was unaware of his passing.  Eleanor died on November 23rd, 2012, exactly four months later, at Annemark peacefully & quietly.  Family & friends are invited to attend their Memorial Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 19th, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, followed by entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel Building in the Narcissus Room, Everett.  Mr. McFarland was born in Framingham, raised in Charlestown, & attended Charlestown schools.  Most of his working career was spent with the former B&M RR (Boston & Maine Railroad), as a Policeman for them for over 45 years.  He also worked as a maintenance supervisor for the MBTA, retiring in 1985.  Mrs. McFarland was born in Boston, raised & educated in Somerville, & is an alumna of Somerville High School, Class of 1940.  For many years, she worked for the Somerville Hospital, as a Patients’ Advocate & Adjucator.  Mrs. McFarland was a longtime member of the Guild at the Italian Home for Children in Jamaica Plain.  Mr. & Mrs. McFarland lived most of their lives in Somerville, until coming to Revere in 1998 (15 years ago).  They are the beloved & devoted Parents of Lorna M. McFarland of Hudson, Florida & Lynne M. McFarland-Robison & her husband, David V. Robison of Revere.  They are the Cherished Grandparents of Edward M. Piscopo of Manchester, NH, David M. Piscopo & his wife, Priscilla of Salem, NH, & the dear Great-Grandparents of Brittany D. & Miranda L. Piscopo of Manchester, NH & Jessica L. & Angela Piscopo of Salem, NH.  Mrs. McFarland is the dear Sister of Constance Rando of Wilmington.  Mr. McFarland is the brother of the late: Henry McFarland & Margaret Bartera.  They are also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces & grand-nephews.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to: St. Jude Childrens’ Research Hospital, P.O. Family & friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, January 11th, 2013 from 4 – 8 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Alda (Franco) Palermo, who died on Wednesday evening, January 9th, following a brief illness at Winchester Hospital, Winchester, MA, at 89 years.  Her funeral will be conducted from the funeral home on Saturday, January 12th at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere, at 10:30 a.m.  Mrs. Palermo was born & raised in East Boston & educated in East Boston schools.  Mrs. Palermo worked as a candy packer for the former Charlestown Chew Candy Company of Everett for over ten years.  Upon her marriage to Antonio S. Palermo in 1955, she & her husband made their home in Everett, where they remained until moving to West Peabody in 1991.  Mr. Palermo passed on June 20th, 2004.  She is the devoted mother of: Joanne M. Fitzpatrick & her husband Michael J. of Limerick, Maine, Donna M. Milley & her husband George H. of West Peabody, & Stephen Palermo & his wife Justine of Wilmington.  She is the dear sister of Maria Giunta of Everett, Richard Franco & his wife Marguerite of West Peabody, Frederick Franco & his wife Helen of Framingham, & the late John & Ralph Franco.  She is the Cherished Grandmother of Michael J. John T. Hegarty

Family & friends are invited to visit with family on Sunday, January 13th beginning at 12 noon in the Vertuccio and Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere for John T. Hegarty, who died unexpectedly at his Randolph residence on January 3rd.  His funeral service will be conducted in the funeral at 1:00 p.m.. Mr. Hegarty suffered an Acute Myocardial Infarction, upon returning from working the niteshift at Stop & Shop (Thursday January 3rd),  He had worked for  Stop & Shop as a foreman for the past four years.  Prior to that time, he worked in the roofing industry and for many years, worked with “Angelo’s Roofing” of Revere.  john was an avid boater and enjoyed his time on the ocean, sailing the harbor.  He is the beloved and faithful husband for 29 years to Lee M. (Frieder) of Randolph, He is the devoted brother to: Kathleen M. Walsh and Maureen A. Alinkonis both of Winthrop and the late Michael J. Hegarty.  He is the dear uncle of: Stefani Kosinski of Chelsea, Dianna (Walsh) of San Dieago, CA, Daniel & Andrew Walsh both of St. Petersburg, FL and Christopher, Nicholas & Ryan Alikonis all of Tewksbury.  He is the brother – In law of: Maryann Hegart of Revere , Ellen Spicuzza of Canton,  Laurance Walsh of Winthrop and Stephen Alikonis of Tewksbury.  He is the caring nephew of Robert o. Family & friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday, January 10th, 2013 from 4 – 7 p.m. in the Vertuccio & Smith Home for Funerals, 773 Broadway (Route 107), Revere, for Maggie M. (Sotuyo) Hartigan, who died on Thursday, January 3rd at the Kaplan Family Hospice House of Danvers, following a long illness, at 57 years.  Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 11th at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach St. & Winthrop Ave.), Revere.  All are asked to report directly to Church.  Mrs. Hartigan was born in Brownsville, Texas, lived there most of her life & was a 1975 alumna of  Homer Hanna High School in Brownsville, TX.  She was a waitress for several area restaurants in Brownsville before coming to West Peabody 12 years ago.  For several years, she worked in the Peabody School system as a teacher’s aide before joining the security team at Logan Airport where she was employed as a TSA until her health began to fail.  Throughout her long & arduous illness, she never became negative nor did she lose her uncanny & immense sense of humor & wit.  She was an outstanding wife, mother, sister, daughter, niece, cousin, grandmother & colleague.  Her almost contagious laugh & hearty attitude will long be remembered by all.  She was an exceptionally enthusiastic cheerleader at her childrens’ sporting events.  She is the beloved wife of 22 years to Paul E. Hartigan.  She is the cherished Mother of: John Michael Mejorado of Brownsville, TX, Paul E. & Siobhan J. Hartigan both of Peabody.  She is the adored daughter of, Ester (Olvera) Sotuyo of Brownsville, TX & the late Gilbert Sotuyo.  She is the dear sister of, Gloria S. Flesner of Houston, TX, Gilbert Sotuyo, Jr. & his wife Terry, Rosy Johnson & her husband Robert, Joey Sotuyo & his wife Penny, Jimmy S. Sotuyo, Norma Salazar & her husband Jerry, all of Brownsville, TX, & the late Danny Sotuyo.  She is also lovingly survived by her grandson, Levi Mejorado, & many caring nieces & nephews, & the large extended Hartigan family of the North Shore & beyond.  Maggie was also the daughter-in-law of the late: Dr. William J. Hartigan & Marion P. (Brown) Hartigan.  Dr. Hartigan was the retired Assistant Postmaster General for the Bureau of Transportation & International Services, under JFK.  All of her family & most especially, her nieces & nephews, will hold her “in the palm of their hand,” for her dignity, strength, compassion & grace.The family acknowledges with grateful hearts the extraordinary care of  Dr. Alain Chaoui & Dr. Stephanie Moore as well as the entire staff of North Shore Hospice.  In lieu of flowers,remembrances may be made in Memory of Maggie Hartigan to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Central New England Chapter, 101 First Ave., Waltham, MA 02454.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.
Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.

To all our families, friends, and residents of Revere, East Boston, and surrounding communities of the North Shore,

We would like to announce that after 37 years of caring for thousands of families at our 773 Broadway location, on January 31st, 2023 we will be officially RELOCATING, to our new location at 262 Beach St., Revere.

On September 30th, 2022, we proudly purchased the Vazza “Beechwood” Funeral Home – DiPietro and Vazza, Inc. A name that has served families for 102 years. We feel blessed that with all of the interest, the Vazza Family chose us to carry on their century old business and family name. We will become Vertuccio Smith & Vazza, Beechwood Home for Funerals. We will continue to honor the Vazza name and continue our commitment the same way that we always have. We also look forward to having both Louis Vazza and Jessica Vazza Ferragamo alongside of us, as we come together as one.

Our reputation has always been our biggest asset. For many years people always wanted us to have a larger facility, now our facility is the largest funeral home in the area. We will be making many beautiful upgrades to allow our families to have the most elegant facility to honor their loved one.
